17. Goals of the Curriculum To prepare specialists with the Master’s degree able to workin charge of issues in the areas of environmental protection, nature protection and environmental management, in assessment of plans in the field of environment, as well as strategic assessment of environmental impact and assessment of environmental impact, to work in the area of environmental conservation, nature conservation and environmental protection in the respective agencies, authorities and companies, research and educational institutions.The objective of the secondary specialty is to diversify career options in the areas of policy and international activities.

To acquire knowledge and competencies for research work and continuing studies in doctoral studies.

18. Outcomes of study  The following is acquired while completing the Master’s study curriculum of Environmental protection• basic standpoints in theoretical ecology and environmental science;• strategic management, basics of strategic environmental assessment;

• basics of sustainable development concept and principles of environmental policy (EU, countries of the Baltic Sea region, Estonia);

• GIS software applications used in environmental protection and plans;

• competencies in information collection, information searching, information processing and establishing databases required for planning, expert opinions and research work;

• basics of environmental monitoring;

• professional terminology in English and/or Russian;

• knowledge and competencies for continuing studies in doctoral studies.

21. Short description of the Curriculum structure The curriculum comprises the following modules:– Theory and research methods (16.0 ECTS)– Environmental policy (18.5 ECTS)

– Environmental management (12.5 ECTS)

– Monitoring of ecological resources (12.0 ECTS)

– Practical training (9,5 ECTS)

– Elective subjects (volume 93.5 ECTS), min 21.5 ECTS must be selected for main field of studies and secondary specialty – 26.5 ECTC

– Optional subjects (5.0 ECTS)

– Master thesis (25.0 ECTS)

22. Options for completing the Curriculum During the studies subjects in the prescribed volume are selected from the module of elective subjects, as well as optional subjects from the curricula of EuroAcademy or any other establishment of higher education, incl. foreign universities that support the completion of the selected topic of the Master’s thesis. In order to complete secondary specialty, subjects in the extent of 45 ECTC are selected in the field of environmental policy.
23. Graduation requirements Completion of the full curriculum, incl. defending the Master’s thesis that comprises research work equivalent to a scientific article on the subject and in the volume approved by the faculty.

Goals To make students familiar with various theories of disciplines within the limits of the specialty and to provide an overview of empirical and experimental research methods.

Principles of elective: compulsory module

 

Name of module: Environmental policy Volume: 18.5 ECTS
Goals To explain the philosophical essence of environmental policy and environmental strategies, their links to other areas of society (economic and social spheres, security issues etc.), factors and mechanisms serving as the basis of development of environmental policy on the national, regional and EU level.
Study outcomes The students acquire the basics of the environmental policy in the European Union, having evolved on the basis of the paradigm of sustainable development, policies of specific areas, environmental action plans (programmes) and regional and national environmental strategies. The students acquire competencies in the use of sources of environmental information.

Goals To obtain an overview of the organisation of environmental and nature protection on the national, regional and EU level.
Study outcomes The students acquire the fundamentals of strategic management in the extent required for conducting strategic environmental assessment and environmental impact assessments, acquire knowledge in the organisation and management of environmental protection on various levels starting from enterprises, local and national governments to the EU level, acquire the basis of environmental technology and environmental quality management and the related legal basis.

Goals To acquire an overview of the theoretical basis of environmental monitoring and methods and means of quality assessment of environmental components and elements as ecological resources.
Study outcomes The students acquire basics of environmental monitoring, methods of systematic quality assessment of the environmental components and respective devices, environmental quality modelling, mechanisms of preparing overviews and international cooperation in the area of environmental monitoring.

Name of module: Practical training EMEN4000 Volume: 9.5 ECTS
Goals To develop the students’ abilities and skills in collecting environmental information, processing, submitting and presentation thereof, incl. preparation of thematic lectures and learning materials.
Study outcomes The students prepare the report theses, short articles, lecture materials as multimedia presentations, they also prepare and present at student conference or other academic conference the results of their own or collective research work in the manner that complies with the level and volume of scientific reports. During the practical training in the specialty the students acquire competencies required for the performance of the selected work segment and tasks, the environmental functions of an enterprises or agencies and the guidelines are prepared for the completion thereof.

Goals To provide opportunities to students for acquiring additional knowledge in the narrow area addressing environmental issues that they have selected on the basis of foreign-language literature, to improve knowledge in the field of professional terminology in the foreign language. To provide basic knowledge and competencies required for the secondary specialty.
Study outcomes
The students acquire knowledge in the area of their Master’s thesis, experience in searching for information, literature in the foreign language and use of databases. Secondary specialty, in the extent of 45 ECTC, students acquire basic knowledge in environmental policy, the evolvement, application, functioning and developments of the policy, systems of environmental management, legal and administrative structures.

Principles of elective: in compliance with the Master’s thesis or field of research. Secondary specialty Environmental Policy is acquired upon the completion of optional subjects of the module Environmental policy in the minimum extent of 26.5 ECTC.

Goals To provide an opportunity to the students to further their knowledge in the selected specialty or broadening their professional scope in the similar areas.
Study outcomes Promoting competence or acquiring additional competence in the areas similar to the students’ own specialty on the basis of same level curricula in EuroAcademy or curricula of other universities, incl. foreign universities.

Master thesis EMEN7000 Volume: 25.0 ECTS
Goals To secure the competencies in the environmental field acquired during the studies, to prepare a research work that complies with the requirements to research work and respective practices.
Study outcomes Master’s thesis – independent research work on the subject approved by the faculty that is equivalent to the quality of a scientific article as to the extent and content.
Assessment Grade given at the defence A, B, C, D, E according to the established criteria
