17. The study programme objectives To train skilled translators capable of development in the given domain. To combine the knowledge of translation studies and linguistics with practical translation skills.  

Graduates are capable of working as translators in different spheres: in state-owned and private enterprises, companies, institutions, translation bureaus. Graduates acquire expertise for solving professional problems.

To acquire knowledge and skills for continuing studies for an MA degree.

The graduate student

– Acquires systemic theoretical bases of the speciality, including corresponding terminology. Is competent in theoretical principles of the speciality and methodological basics of research.

 

– Recognizes interdisciplinary connections in the domain of translation due to implementing ties between course units in the study process. Is able to apply his/her knowledge and skills as well as translation creativity in different fields of translation.

 

– Identifies and is able to formulate problems related to the study area. Can independently analyse and assess various solutions.

 

– Analyses and critically selects translation-related information using relevant methods and means.

 

– Masters managing and teamwork skills; displays initiative and responsibility in initiating and implementing projects.

 

– Can analyse own activities in the job situation, acts professionally under any circumstances, being aware of the ethical aspects of own activities and the impact on society.

MODULES OF MAJOR COURSES

Name of module: Main languages Volume: 30.0 ECTS
Objectives Developing further the four basic skills in English (listening, writing, reading, and speaking). Appropriate command of English and mother tongue in written and oral forms; grammatical and stylistic correctness in English and mother tongue usage.  Ongoing enrichment of vocabulary. Diversification of syntactic structures and their active use. Eliminating typical collocational mistakes in English and mother tongue.
Learning outcomes Ability to express oneself on a high level in written and oral English and mother tongue in different communication contexts.  Proficiency in English corresponding to C1 level.

Has a proper command of  both oral and written forms of the language of instruction and those of a foreign language to explain and discuss issues related to translation. Is able to participate in discussions on professional topics.

Principles of selection: A compulsory module

 

Name of module: Translation Volume: 44.0 ECTS
Objectives Developing translation competence. Developing skills of practical written translation of texts of different kinds for working in the chosen field. Training skilled translators capable of development in the given domain.
Learning outcomes Knows the principles of adequate translation, translation techniques, peculiarities of translating texts of different kinds, and can implement them in practical professional activities, relying also on translation software and electronic tools. Is aware of the importance of professional ethics.

Orientates in innovations, and is able to create and find different options and translation solutions in their work. Has a systemic overview of the translator´s competences and application possibilities in society.

Orientates in online information sources and databases necessary for professional work, and is able to use them for retrieving information essential for the translator´s job. Acquires communication skills needed for professional work.

Principles of selection: A compulsory module

 

Name of module: Fundamentals in translation studies and

                              linguistics

Volume: 24.0 ECTS
Objectives Providing quality knowledge of translation studies and its application as well as knowledge of linguistics with a practical bias. Acquainting students with lexicological and stylistic peculiarities of English on a practical level. Teaching to relate the acquired knowledge to practical translation activities. Acquiring practical skills in using punctuation in English.
Learning outcomes Knows topical issues of their major field of study. Is familiar with present-day literature on translation. In addition to knowing and using information search systems, is competent in performing pre- and post-translation analysis, relying also on knowledge of linguistics. Is able to assess possible consequences of own activities.

Knowledge of basic translation and linguistic terms, their appropriate usage in translation activities. Basic knowledge of English lexicology and stylistics, ability to link it with the specifics of the translated text for achieving adequate translation.  Consideration of the stylistic properties of the mother tongue in the translation process.

Objectives Acquiring basic knowledge in areas that are this way or other connected with the major speciality and that will be of use in one´s professional activities.
Learning outcomes Has extensive overview of the bases of humanitarian and social sciences and knows their main present-day development trends, which enables to actively participate in social and cultural life. Is tolerant as regards different opinions, attitudes and values.

Knowledge of the labour market opportunities as regards translation, incl. launching own business.

Ability to use English in business and international contexts.

Knowledge of the main cultural theories and the culture of English-speaking countries.

Learning outcomes Basic knowledge of different areas of study. Ability to establish interdisciplinary connections between the major field of study and other course units. Ability of using respective terminology in translation. Ability to analyse and generalize, to implement the acquired knowledge in particular spheres. Sufficient competence for further independent studies. Raising the level of handling the computer. Knowledge and skills for writing a graduation thesis.

Objectives Satisfying the student´s extracurricular individual needs and interests.
Learning outcomes Learning outcomes depend on the selection of particular courses and their syllabuses.
Assessment Based on the general assessment system according to courses.

Principles of selection: As regards courses at liberty, the Translation Faculty recommends selecting such courses at other Faculties of EuroAcademy or other higher education institutions that support the acquisition of the major speciality (e.g. English for International Relations, English for Environmental Protection).

 

Internship TPRU4000 Volume: 27.0 ECTS
Objectives The goal of internship is to further develop translation skills in practical translation activities in a working environment through translating texts of different kinds; to acquire direct knowledge and skills concerning the functioning of the labour market; to polish self-analysis skills; to better realize one´s strengths and weaknesses; to establish contacts with potential prospective employers and clients.

Internship is divided into observation internship (2 ECTS) and field internship (25 ECTS).

Learning outcomes In-depth practical skills in translation. Polishing the knowledge of terminology in different areas. Gaining experience in teamwork.

Gaining and polishing communication skills. Raising competence in ICT usage. Awareness of the role and consequences of translation activities. Readiness for independent further studies and raising professional qualification jobwise.

 

Assessment Assessment form: credit test. The student submits the filled-in internship register and samples of own translations.

Principles of selection: A compulsory module

 

 

Paper or examination as a prerequisite for graduation: Graduation thesis  TPRU7000 Volume: 10.0 ECTS
Objectives Further developing research expertise. Thorough knowledge of theoretical sources related to the chosen topic. Polishing own usage of the register of scientific discourse.

Graduation thesis:  own independent translation with commentaries (volume  ~ 40 pp.)

Learning outcomes Performing adequate translation proceeding from the linguistic peculiarities of the selected text. Collecting, analysing and categorising theoretical and practical material. Justifying and defending own translation choices and solutions. Presenting the graduation thesis at the public defence.
Assessment Graded assessment. Grade given at the defence A, B, C, D, E according to the established criteria. Assessment takes place at the public defence.
